Founded in 1997, the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering at George Mason University has grown into an internationally recognized leader in engineering education and research. Renamed in 2012 to honor Sid and Reva Dewberry, the department builds on its origins in urban infrastructure to address the evolving needs of sustainable cities, resilient communities, and environmental stewardship.
Our Mission
CEIE prepares graduates to address today’s most complex, multi-disciplinary engineering challenges. Building on a strong foundation in urban infrastructure engineering, the department drives the development of sustainable cities and resilient communities, serving as a key contributor to Virginia’s economic growth.
The BS, MS, and PhD programs focus on developing the technical expertise, analytical skills, and leadership qualities needed to meet these challenges. Students benefit from mentorship by faculty engaged in nationally and internationally recognized research in structural engineering, water resources, environmental systems, transportation, and smart infrastructure. Leveraging advanced research facilities and strong partnerships with government agencies, engineering firms, and community organizations, the department delivers innovations that promote sustainable growth, resilience, and global impact.
CEIE graduates emerge prepared to lead projects that improve quality of life and protect critical infrastructure, fulfilling the department’s mission to educate civil engineers as visionary stewards of society.
Centers and Labs
Our labs support research through various centers and labs focused on sustainability, infrastructure resilience, and smart cities. Facilities provide hands-on opportunities for students and faculty to explore structural, environmental, and transportation engineering. These spaces foster interdisciplinary collaboration and practical learning in cutting-edge civil engineering topics.
